Backpacking Travel Tips

  • Visas: You can easily get an e-visa online or a visa on arrival at most airports and borders. It’s a quick process.
  • Cash: Cambodia uses U.S. dollars for most transactions. Keep some small Cambodian Riel for minor purchases. ATMs are available in cities but not as common in rural areas or islands, so grab cash when you can.
  • Tuk-Tuks: Tuk-tuks are the main way to get around. Just agree on a price before you get in. Haggling is part of the fun!
  • Pack Light: It’s hot and humid, so light clothing is key. Bring something to cover your shoulders and knees for temples.
  • SIM Cards: Local SIM cards are cheap and make it easy to stay connected. Grab one for data and navigation.
  • Respect the Culture: Dress modestly, especially at temples, and always ask before taking photos of locals. To immerse yourself more in the culture, learn some Khmer phrases. The locals will love it!
