Brunch is always a good idea, and to help you enjoy the best meal of the day, we’ve created a guide on where to get brunch and breakfast in the Northern Thai city of Chiang Mai. Whether you are attempting to cure your hangover, looking for one meal to cover both breakfast and lunch, or simply trying to find an excuse to start drinking at noon, we’ve got you covered! Here, our round-up of the best places for brunch and breakfast in Chiang Mai.

Overstand Cafe

Overstand Cafe is found within the Old City and is serving up some of the most delicious breakfast items you will find in all of Chiang Mai. This eatery is perfect for those international travelers who are feeling nostalgic and wanting some reminders of home, as Overstand’s menu boasts some of the best Western brunch foods. One of our favorite brunch items was the oven roasted mushrooms on fresh sourdough, which was covered in pesto sauce and topped with rocket, chives, and feta cheese. Breakfast only starts at ฿100 (about $3), as well, making it one of the most affordable venues on our list. The food here is best enjoyed with one of their signature coffees, like the incredible and delicious ice coconut espresso (฿100).  In addition to having great brunch options, this restaurant is also equipped with a few games to keep you busy while you indulge, including Cards Against Humanity, Uno, Tic-Tac-Toe, and more.

Rustic & Blue

This brunch cafe is best for those of you looking for one of the widest selections of cuisine in Chiang Mai. Visitors will feel as though they’re in someone’s own backyard or kitchen instead of a dining venue whilst indulging in the creative dishes found on Rustic & Blue’s menu. All of the ingredients in the dishes are fresh, local, and seasonal, so you ensured a delicious meal when choosing this eatery to get your brunch on. Rustic & Blue opened in 2012 in the Nimman area and has been serving up an all-day breakfast ever since. Vegan Heaven

If you are looking for a delicious vegan breakfast in Chiang Mai, look no further than Vegan Heaven. MSG, chemicals, preservatives: none of these things will be found in any of the dishes at this venue. This vegan-friendly restaurant is owned by Phayungchit Khidhen (aka Nan). She opened her first Thai restaurant in Australia in 2003 but moved back to Chiang Mai after five years. She opened the original Taste From Heaven in 2008 and moved it to its current location in 2014. Vegan Heaven is her latest venue, (there are two locations), and it has an extensive selection of both Thai and Western dishes. One of our favorite menu items are the breakfast ones. There are three breakfast sets available until 1:30 p.m., and they start at ฿140 (about $4.20). In addition to breakfasts, you will also find Western food, sandwiches, light meals and appetizers, soups, salads, curries, rice and noodles, and, last but not least, desserts on the menu at Vegan Heaven. This venue is also serving up coffee, tea, kombucha, alcoholic cocktails, wine, beer, spirits, fruit juice, vegetable juice, and smoothies.

The Barn Eatery And Design

If you are looking for a cool place to drink, eat, or meet fellow creative minds, The Barn Eatery and Design is the venue for you. The restaurant and cafe duo is decked out in cool artwork, from hand-drawn photos of the king to old typewriters and more. As its name suggests, the venue is shaped like a barn but is way more stylish than your average shed. The place is practically all windows, allowing plenty of light to shine through this incredible cafe. Trendy music plays in the background, and it is filled with young locals; not a single foreigner was in sight when we visited. The venue opened in 2013 and has a huge selection of drinks including coffee, tea, Italian soda, smoothies, and more. There are also loads of additional add-ons, like soy milk, toffee nut, or hazelnut syrup. The piña colada float is perfect for cooling off in Chiang Mai’s summer heat and is best paired with a delicious dish. Menu items include starters, pasta, noodles, mains, and more. Be sure to check it out!

Chiang Mai Breakfast World

When the word, “breakfast” is in the title of a restaurant, you know a venue is going to be serving up delicious, first meal of the day, dishes. Chiang Mai Breakfast World doubles as a German beer garden, which makes it the perfect place to “hair the dog” after a night out in the city. What makes this venue a popular one for brunchers in the city are the many of breakfast foods this eatery is serving up. In addition to tasty finds, the atmosphere at Chiang Mai Breakfast World is incredibly welcoming with a friendly staff to boot. The aura is best enjoyed with a delicious Western breakfast with a twist, like their waffles with mango.

Libernard Cafe

Libernard Cafe certainly knows how to advertise. The large sign out front declares to all who pass that it has the best coffee in town and serves up all-day breakfast in Chiang Mai. We were certainly intrigued and are happy we stopped by. The cafe itself is simple, equipped with only six tables and wooden seating on colorfully tiled flooring. It is definitely worth a stop, however. Libernard Cafe is renowned for its famous pancakes, including their banana oatmeal pancakes, banana strawberry pancakes, and more. Ravenous diners may instead opt for one of the banana pancake sets, which includes tasty items like coffee, bacon, eggs, and even vanilla ice cream, depending on which one you select. Add-ons are incredibly affordable, as well, so feel free to mix and match until you have created your perfect brunch set. For those of you hailing from the U.S., be sure to check out their American-style breakfast: two eggs, an omelet, toast with butter and jam, two slices of bacon, hash brown potatoes, an Americano, latte, and fresh juice (฿225).

The Laboratory Hotel & Across The Universe Cafe

Breakfast in Chiang Mai just got a whole lot more interesting thanks to The Laboratory Hotel & Across The Universe Cafe. Brunch is not necessarily a weekly ritual for people in Southeast Asia as it is in other parts of the world, but not anymore thanks to this cafe and hotel duo. Kick-start your brunch with a drip coffee or a fresh smoothie before moving onto the good stuff. This vintage-style gallery and coffee shop is meant to look like a laboratory: hence it’s name. Once inside, you will find the skeletal remains of some pretty interesting creatures as well as a greenhouse eating space. If you absolutely love this cafe, you can also sleep here, as it is equipped with both private and dorm rooms.
