“We had so much fun here! Stayed in a private room (very clean and comfortable with Ac), food was fantastic in the restaurant…infact we rarely ate elsewhere! Very social with lots of mingling during the day and night. Big red Jaffa (bar manager) was lively and got everyone going every night we were there. Themed nights, games, songs, bar crawls, clubs are the norm.. On our way to the one in Siem Reap now :)”

ST 63 Hostel
ST 63 Hostel is another backpacker – friendly hostel that is really close to the Genocide Museum and Independence Monument. Right now it is not yet within the radar of most backpackers so you might find yourself staying here quite more peaceful and less crowded than the rest. “It was a lovely homely hostel in a great location.The rooms were spotless. As it was pouring with rain one our first night we decided not to venture out for dinner, and we’re really glad we didn’t. The food at the resturant benneath the hostel is soo delicious.”

Camory Backpackers Hostel
Camory Backpackers Hostel’s huge advantage is its location. It is just 5-minute walk from Wat Phnom and with a great view of the Mekong River. It is also a short walking distance to Royal Palace, National Museum and the Night Market.
From afar it looks small and dark but when you get inside the rooms are spacious. Currently Camory Backpackers Hostel has no official website (can’t give the direct price) so you need to book through hostel sites. It costs $8 in a mixed dorm through Booking.com

“Price is good. Location is OK but walking distances are huge in PP. Staff were super friendly, everything can be arranged by them such as tuktuk and buses. The hostel has a very chill vibe to it and its easy to meet fellow travelers.”

One Stop Hostel
One Stop Hostel is the only one this list that is not a party hostel. If you are young but looking for a retreat – like accommodation, this is for you. “Great facilities offering large beds, strong wifi, sockets and lights for each bed and very clean – usual good standard for One Stop Hostels. Good mix of ages in the hostel. The location was good, walkable to most central areas.”

Top Banana Guesthouse
Top Banana is one of the oldest backpacker guesthouses in Phnom Penh with a shaded and breezy rooftop terrace for 15 years now. The reception is located on the 3rd floor so you have to climb up the stairs first. It is located only 9 km away from Phnom Penh International Airport and very near Wat Langka. “We stayed here for 2 nights. The staff is super friendly and the rooftopbar is a great place to meet other travelers while enjoying a beer over the roofs of Phnom Penh. The rooms were pretty good and clean. We did a tour to the killing fields with people from the hostel. It is a gods way to lower the cost for a tuk tuk. We can only recommend this place, if you are interested in hanging out with other backpackers and spend some nice days in Phnom Penh.”

Eighty8 Guesthouse
What differs Eighty8 guesthouse from the rest in this list is that they have a swimming pool where you can top your tan while sipping cocktails. They also just added a newer type room called Private Pod – a Japanese concept of compact sleeping spaces. It is just like the normal dorm bed but it is cocooned by walls to all sides. “Excellent chill out area, and relaxed vibes. Brilliant food. The rooms are average, but you get what you pay for. The bathrooms were good, showers could be a little bit more powerful and the floors obviously get very slippy when wet, so maybe some sticky bath mats would be a good addition.”

White Rabbit Guesthous
White Rabbit Guesthouse looks like a typical gated house at first sight. The bar, furniture and walls are mostly made of wood and bamboo with native lanterns that gives everyone truly a local’s touch. Take a peek inside the rooms and dorm beds, it shows much formal color of white and black/blue color combination of bed sheets and pillows. If you’re on a really tight budget, they have a shared room for $3 – with a fan and a matress on the floor.

Hidden away from the hubbub of Phnom Penh, Mini Banana also comes with a well – manicured garden. Mini Banana and Top Banana is owned by same persons so expect similarities of menus and maybe same backpackers just switching back and forth to these guesthouses. Rooms and dorm beds come in white and orange combination. They have a small and well – manicured garden full of hanging plants. If you love nature, you’ll definitely enjoy here. “Bas and Pauline, a lovely couple working at Mini Banana will welcome you in a very friendly way. The rooms are simple yet clean and the dorm has been newly renovated and looks great. The bar is very friendly and you can meet a lot of nice people. It is also close to many city activities. On the weekends, it can get a bit loud as a lot of people like to come and have a good time here. I highly recommend this place!”

Blue Dog is a family-owned backpacker hostel located near Independence Monument. Its walls and doors are decorated by huge paintings.
