Traditional Lao Massage

When in Luang Prabang, be sure to try a traditional Lao massage! This technique involves rhythmically putting pressure on the energy lines of the body, with the masseur using their thumbs and body weight. Traditional Lao massages are said to alleviate tension, clear energy blockages, and improve blood circulation. When getting body massages, they will typically give you a change of loose clothing to wear. Unless specified, Lao massages will not use oils or creams.
If you’re feeling sore or achey, a Lao massage is an ideal way to ease the pain. Though not quite as aggressive as Thai massage, Lao massages can still be a tad bit painful, as a lot of pressure is applied to your body.

Foot Reflexology in Laos

Like many Asian countries, reflexology is prominent in Laos. Based on the belief that the feet are “mirrors” of the body, pressure is applied to specific parts of the feet, which are connected to different areas and organs of the body. This pressure is meant to clear blocked energy and even alleviate some ailments. Other benefits of reflexology include stress relief, improved digestion, a boosted immune system, and increased circulation.

Where to get a massage in Luang Prabang on a budget

While there are plenty of boujee spots to get pampered at, there are also numerous affordable spas where you can get just as good of a massage. The following spas are all located right in the center of Luang Prabang and have 60 minute massages starting at 60,000 kip (or around $6.75 USD).

Silver Naga Spa And Beauty

We’re back to basics over here, but simplicity wins. Choose between a traditional Lao massage, a head and neck massage, back and shoulder massage, or foot reflexology for 60, 90 or 120 minutes. They put the pressure on, but are sure to ask you if you’re comfortable to ensure you have a relaxing massage.

There are a row of chairs downstairs looking out onto the main street of Luang Prabang where you can get your feet rubbed down after a long day of exploring. If you prefer a body massage, you’ll be brought upstairs where there are curtains partitioning off floor cushions.

How to get to Luang Prabang

The most common ways to get to Luang Prabang is by slow boat, plane, or overnight bus. If you’re coming from Hanoi, you can take the famous 27-ish hour bus ride to Luang Prabang. Otherwise, you can fly for a pretty penny. If you’re coming from Chiang Mai, flying is also an option, but many opt for the slow boat down the Mekong.
