Mahasiddha Yoga
Tantra yoga first became popular in India in the fourth and fifth centuries. Tantra shifted what yoga was believed to be; primarily focusing solely on meditating and sitting … for a very long time. But tantra yoga has grown immensely in popularity, and one of the best places to try your hand at this branch of yoga is at Mahasiddha Yoga in Chiang Mai. Mahasiddha Yoga is a large studio that specializes in tantra yoga. Mahasiddha Yoga offers anywhere from five to eight classes per week of yoga and tantra, as well as a men’s and women’s circle and more. They also offer free classes on occasion, so be sure to check their schedule to see which one might be a good fit for you. In addition to offering incredible tantra classes, this studio also has free events held every Sunday, whether that be meditation or something more casual like a movie night. This is one yoga studio you must check out before departing Chiang Mai!

One Nimman
I was a bit skeptical about joining a free yoga class, but One Nimman ended up being one of my favorite-ever yoga classes. The courtyard at Nimman One shopping center hosts various events like organic farmers markets, free salsa classes, pop-up shops, and more. Even when it’s broiling out, the open-air wooden structure manages to keep everybody cool in the shade while they practice.
There are several rotating yoga instructors that teach this class: hatha on Tuesdays and hatha vinyasa on Thursdays. Their exceptional technique and cheeky sense of humor create a positive and constructive atmosphere to do yoga in Chiang Mai. By taking everyone step-by-step through each pose, they facilitate the proper way to enter and maintain a pose that will be most beneficial to your body. The teacher I had also managed to give each person attention and help, even though there were more than forty of us. Mats are provided at this popular class, but be sure to come early to get a good spot!

Bodhi Tree Cafe
Bodhi Tree Cafe in Chiang Mai is a triple threat. Not only does this venue offer yoga classes, but it also has Thai cooking classes as well as a delicious restaurant on site serving up some of the best cuisine in town. Let’s move on from the mouthwatering cuisine (for now) and focus instead on the incredible classes offered at Bodhi Tree Cafe. Located on the second floor of the restaurant, yogis will be greeted by an open-concept studio with nothing but nature acting as its walls. The teacher here is incredibly friendly (and flexible) and gives each student individual attention during each class to help them better their practice. Bodhi Tree Cafe offers a hatha yoga class at 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. as well as acro yoga for beginners at 6 p.m. For more information about their classes, be sure to check out their Facebook! The best part about these classes is that each one ends with a freshly squeezed juice … what could be better than that?

Yoga Kuukan
Yoga Kuukan is a quaint studio that is almost entirely hidden by lush foliage. If it were not for the small sign out front, you just might miss it. With that being said, it is one of our favorite places to practice yoga in Chiang Mai. The studio is located on the second floor of the Thai-style home. The room is almost entirely wooden, with hanging lights providing class attendees with a romantic ambiance in which to develop their practice.
The teachers are also incredibly friendly and accommodating, providing visitors with alternatives to every pose in case some are too difficult to twist your way through. There are no mirrors, allowing visitors to throw self-doubt to the wind and simply go with the pose as instructed. With that being said, one of the best things about Yoga Kuukan is that all of the classes are beginner-friendly, so you do not need to worry about attempting poses you will not be able to untangle yourself out of later on. Drop-ins are welcome, and yogis are encouraged to show up about 15 minutes before class to sign in and get their equipment ready. Yoga mats and water are provided.
*Be aware that classes will only take place if there are two or more participants
