That makes the island as interesting for its local culture as it is for its beaches and coral reefs.
Two days give you enough time to see Koh Sdach without rushing from one activity to the next.
How to Get to Koh Sdach
Getting to Koh Sdach looks different depending on where you’re coming from.
- From Phnom Penh: Take a bus or minivan to Kiri Sakor, which takes approximately 4.5 hours. From there, Mad Monkey’s private boat takes around 20 minutes to reach its private pier on Koh Sdach.
- From Sihanoukville: A boat to Mad Monkey’s pier takes around 60 minutes.
- From Koh Rong: You can also take a boat to Koh Sdach, with the crossing to Mad Monkey’s pier taking around 60 minutes.
Boat services from Sihanoukville and nearby islands can operate only once a day, so book at least 24 hours ahead when possible.

Pro Tip: Don’t arrive on Koh Sdach without cash. There are currently no ATMs on the island, so withdraw enough money before you travel for accommodation, food, boat trips, and other expenses.
Day 1: Dive into Island Life
Morning: Arrival and Check-In
After the boat ride, check in, leave your bags, and take a little time to settle in.

Look for local restaurants serving freshly caught fish, squid, crab, or other seafood depending on the day’s catch. Koh Sdach is also known for Samlor Korko, a Cambodian curry made with vegetables and seafood, as well as fresh fish cooked with a salt crust.

Afternoon: Visit Wat Koh Sdach and See the Island From Above
After lunch, head toward Wat Koh Sdach, the island’s main pagoda.
The pagoda sits above the village and gives you a different perspective of Koh Sdach, with views across the fishing community, harbor, and surrounding sea. It’s also a good reminder that the island has a local identity beyond its beaches and accommodation.
Dress respectfully when visiting the pagoda and avoid treating it like a viewpoint only.
Late Afternoon: Snorkeling and Swimming
Spend the rest of the afternoon in the water.
The waters around Koh Sdach are known for snorkeling and scuba diving, with coral and marine life around the island and its neighboring islands.
Ask your accommodation or a local boat operator about current conditions and where to go. You can arrange a snorkeling trip around nearby reefs or save the longer boat trip for your second day.
Bring reef-safe sunscreen and avoid standing on or touching coral.
Evening: Watch the Sunset by the Water

Koh Sdach is pretty quiet after dark, so don’t expect a long list of bars or clubs. Most evenings are about good food, a few drinks, and hanging out with people you’ve met during the day.
Day 2: Explore and Experience
Morning: Island Hopping and Fishing
Spend your second day exploring beyond the main island.
Koh Sdach is part of a small archipelago of 12 islands, so hiring a local boat is one of the best ways to see more of the area.
Depending on weather, sea conditions, and local boat availability, you can visit nearby islands such as Koh Totang, Koh Ach Seh, and Koh Bong.
Agree on the route, price, and return time with your boat operator before leaving. If you’re traveling with other backpackers, sharing a boat can also make the trip more affordable.
Swim and Snorkel Around the Nearby Islands
The smaller islands are where you’ll find quieter stretches of sand and more opportunities to swim and snorkel.
You don’t need to visit every island. Pick a few stops and leave enough time to actually enjoy them.

Join a Fishing Trip
If you’d rather experience Koh Sdach’s fishing culture firsthand, ask locally about arranging a fishing trip.
Fishing is a major part of life on the island, and local boat operators may be able to arrange trips depending on the weather and their schedules.
This is one activity where it’s better to ask once you’re there than assume a fixed tour will run every day.
Afternoon: Lunch and Village Exploration
Return to Mad Monkey for lunch. Their menu features local Cambodian dishes, as well as Western comfort food for a filling meal.
Spend the afternoon exploring Koh Sdach Village:
- The Village Market: Discover fresh produce, dried seafood, and handmade crafts.
- Fishing Village Stroll: Walk through the fishing village, lined with traditional wooden houses. Observe daily life, meet friendly locals, and watch fishermen tending to their boats and nets.
Cultural tip: Koh Sdach is a working fishing community, not a resort built entirely for tourists. Cover up when walking through the village, keep noise down around local homes and always ask before taking close-up photos of residents.
Evening: Bonfires and Beach Vibes
End your day with a beach bonfire, where travelers gather for music, drinks, and great conversations. Alternatively, head back to the beachfront eateries for a relaxed dinner under the stars.
You’ll have seen the fishing village, spent plenty of time on the water, and explored some of the smaller islands nearby.
What to Know Before Visiting Koh Sdach
A few things are worth sorting out before you get on the boat.
Get Your Cash Before You Arrive
There are no ATMs on Koh Sdach, so take out enough cash in advance. You’ll need it for food, drinks, boat trips, and anything else you buy on the island.
It’s also worth keeping some extra for your trip off the island, just in case your plans change.
Sort Out Your Boat
Don’t leave your Koh Sdach transfer until the last minute. Some boat services only run once a day, and schedules can change with the weather.
If you’re coming from Sihanoukville or another island, check the latest departure times and book ahead. Mad Monkey recommends arranging boat transfers at least 24 hours in advance.
Pack Light, But Bring the Useful Stuff
You won’t need much for two days, but a few things will make island life easier:
- Reef-safe sunscreen
- Insect repellent
- Swimwear
- A reusable water bottle
- Dry bag for your phone and valuables
- Cash
- Any toiletries or medication you normally rely on
Don’t count on being able to pick up every little thing once you’re there.
Sort Out Your Phone Before You Go
Mobile coverage on Koh Sdach can be less reliable than in Cambodia’s cities, so it’s worth getting your data sorted before you arrive.
If you’re using an unlocked phone, an eSIM is a convenient option for staying connected without hunting for a SIM after you arrive. Download and activate it before leaving for the island, then you can use your data for maps, boat contacts, and checking travel updates.
Don’t rely on your connection for everything, though. Save your accommodation details, boat information and anything else you’ll need offline before you go.
