The gist.

Challenge yourself with an unforgettable trekking experience in Sapa, the beautiful northern mountainous highlands of Vietnam. On the trip, you will pass by an endless panorama of snow-capped mountains, terraced rice paddies and colorful hill tribe villages; stop along the way to discover the unique culture of the Hmong and Red Dao people.

The plan.

  1. 1

    Day 1: Hanoi – Sapa – Y Linh Ho – Lao Chai – Ta Van

    Meals: lunch, dinner

  2. 2

    6:00 AM — Bus and tour guide pick-up in Hanoi Old Quarter

    Depart for Sapa via the Noi Bai – Lao Cai highway, enjoying the northwest mountains and terraced fields along the way, with a 30-minute rest stop halfway.

    12:30 PM — Arrive in Sapa and have lunch at the hotel

  4. 4

    2:00 PM — Trek to Y Linh Ho and Lao Chai villages

    Walk about 6 km southeast of Sapa along the slopes of Muong Hoa valley to Y Linh Ho, a Black H'mong village, then about 3 km more to Lao Chai, a H'mong village, crossing a small tunnel/bridge into Muong Hoa valley.

    4:00 PM — Arrive at Ta Van village

    A commune of Sa Pa 8 km from the town centre, home to several ethnic groups, with landmarks such as Ancient Rock Beach, Cau May and Nha San.

    5:00 PM — Check in at the homestay

    You can join a cooking class to learn how to make traditional Vietnamese spring rolls.

    6:30 PM — Dinner of local dishes

    Day 2: Ta Van – Giang Ta Chai – Supan – Sapa – Hanoi

    Meals: breakfast, lunch

    7:00 AM — Breakfast at the homestay

    Trek to Giang Ta Chai and Supan villages

    An 8 km morning walk to visit these two Red Dao villages. Giang Ta Chai is popular with travellers who want to experience colourful traditions and customs.

    12:00 PM — Lunch, then rest at the homestay

    2:00 PM — Car back to Sapa town

    3:00 PM — Bus back to Hanoi
